Uber, Lyft now operating in Las Vegas

After a lengthy legal battle with state and local officials, Uber and Lyft are now operating in Las Vegas.

According to the Las Vegas Sun, State regulators granted final permission on Monday for the ride-sharing companies to operate. Clark County is still attempting to hold up the debut, saying the companies must first obtain newly created county-issued business licenses. A hearing on that topic is scheduled for Oct. 20.

But that’s not stopping Uber and Lyft from moving ahead. Drivers for both services began popping up on the apps late yesterday.

Uber’s cost is similar to regular taxi cabs, charging a $2.40 base fare plus 30 cents a minute and $1.85 per mile. Riders use the app to request a pickup based on GPS location or specific address and pay directly through the mobile interface.

For now, Uber and Lyft will focus on city-wide rides instead of short runs up and down the Strip. Sample fares listed on the Uber website include UNLV to Downtown for $13-17, Downtown to Summerlin for $36-48, and Henderson to Summerlin for $63-84.

Uber first tried to service Las Vegas last October but put operations on hold in November after legal roadblocks.
